About
This modular couch was my 2020-2021 pandemic project! It was inspired by the pain of moving couches, my monthly habit of rearranging my home for my changing workflows, and my aspirations for a playful space.
The modular couch units allows for more configurations than sectional couches, and more frequent reconfigurations. I used high density foam for structure, some batting and densely woven fabric for the lining. The cover is a sturdy polyester. I’ve added straps at the back to make it easier to carry and rearrange, as well as open it up to the possibility of attaching different types of pockets. The strap can also function as a place to hang glasses for naps. The height of the backrest is only 12 inches tall to reduce the material stress from people leaning back on it.
Reflections
Sitting at 90º is not very comfortable. If I were to do this again, I would add an incline and some way to add more structure to the backrest.
I did add wedge pieces to add comfort and fun. The wedges can be used as ramps! And I added “french fry” pieces to be used as arm rests. In practice, the extra pieces add more complexity to the whole arrangement. So even though they are fun to use, more often they feel like they clutter the couch experience.
